Portland Real Estate Law: Loan Modification Help

On Behalf of | Sep 29, 2010 | Uncategorized

Modifying a home loan through a bank can be a Herculean task. Contrary to popular belief, modification of loans is not a brand new industry spawned by the mortgage crisis in late 2008. Many lawyers have been assisting business and individual clients in loan workouts for many years.

The successful applicant is usually the consumer who has the fortitude to wade through mountains of paperwork and seemingly ridiculous questions. But examining those that make it over the mountain, there is a pattern that emerges, whether you’re going it alone or employing an attorney to help you.

They do their homework and come prepared. The successful mortgage holder is prepared for a long, tedious process. Go to the banks website and understand their departments and procedures as much as possible. When it’s time to call the lender, have all your documents spread out and ready to go.

They take notes – of every phone call, and every communication. And their notes are at the ready – always.

Follow the calendar and ask if there is anything you can do for any upcoming appointment. Make their job easier by getting your documents in ahead of time and verify their receipt by your banker. Use certified mail and don’t be afraid to show your own urgency.

And as every other attorney will tell you, never give up. Tenacity of purpose and singularity of intent is the only way to get the job done. The loan modification process is like a sprint, and no matter what happens, if anything goes sideways, keep going, and don’t give up!
